Alex O’Connor
Alex O’Connor graduated High School from St. Mary's in 1982 and earned her B.F.A. from Meredith College in 1986. She went on to study African Art History at Virginia Commonwealth University. She also has an Associates Degree in HVAC and Refrigeration. Alex studied painting with Chapel Hill Artist, Jane Filer, for five years.
She considers herself a “consciously naive” painter. After studying anatomy, perspective, and color theory, she returns to the spontaneity of her childhood. She paints animals because she loves their spirit and form. Patterning and the use of bright color are key elements in her paintings. She paints animals for their unique personalities and form. Alex makes her picture frames and continues the painting on the frame.
She has spent over twenty years observing animals while working with them as a Veterinary Assistant, a dog trainer, a shelter worker, and wildlife rehabilitation volunteer. She believes no living creature is more important than another and Man has a responsibility to stop the harm he has inflicted on this planet. Alex resides in Durham with her husband and five rescued animals.
